Leqembi is coming to Sweden—for the first time, patients in Sweden can now receive a disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer's

‍For the first time, patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease will be able to receive treatment with Leqembi without having to travel abroad. The treatment will be offered privately, and the cost will be high. But this announcement also marks something far more significant: Alzheimer’s is transitioning from a disease where healthcare has primarily been able to alleviate symptoms to one where, for some patients, it is actually possible to influence the course of the disease.

This webinar will focus on Lewy body dementia, how to recognize early signs, and how it differs from other, often similar diagnoses such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Marie Ekelund and Lena Kardefelt will be speaking on this topic. Marie and Lena are two of the three founders of the Swedish Lewy Body Association. Marie’s husband was diagnosed with Lewy body disease in 2018 and passed away in 2024. Marie is a nurse by training and has experience with all stages of the disease. She currently serves as the association’s chairperson. Lena’s husband was diagnosed in 2020 and passed away in March 2026. Lena cared for him at home until the final months of his life, when he was living in a nursing home.

The Swedish government has decided to allocate SEK 48.5 million for the initiation, development, and dissemination of the evidence-based FINGER model in Sweden. The assignment has been given to the National Board of Health and Welfare and marks an important step toward more structured and preventive dementia care nationwide. This is a clear recognition that preventive work in brain health is now a priority issue for society.

In December 2025, TLV published a health economic assessment of Leqembi (lekanemab) on behalf of the NT Council (nationally organized introduction). The TLV report is not a "benefit decision" in the traditional sense (such as when a drug is included in the high-cost protection scheme), but rather a basis for decision-making for the regions via the NT Council. Although lecanemab has been described as a breakthrough in early Alzheimer's, the TLV assesses that the treatment is not worth its price for the Swedish healthcare system. How can a drug that actually slows down the disease still fall at the finish line? And what does this mean in practice for the future of dementia care in Sweden?

The high hopes that Ozempic - one of the world's most talked about drugs - could slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease were dashed when the results of the so-called EVOKE studies were published the other day. This surprised many, as previous data had shown improvements in certain biomarkers and it was hoped that there would be a slowing effect. The announcement raises important questions: if the data showed improvements but then no effect, how does that add up? What does this mean for patients going forward? And what are the implications for the future of dementia prevention and treatment?

In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift in the way we look at cognitive impairment and dementia. From being something we could only diagnose and treat symptomatically, we are now seeing how both drugs and lifestyle interventions can influence the course of the disease even before symptoms become severe. One of the most talked about leads at the moment is semaglutide, better known under the brand name Ozempic - a drug currently used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. The first large studies are now investigating whether the same substance can also slow down the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Results are expected by the end of 2025 - could they change everything?

The government's new dementia strategy assumes that dementia is not a natural part of ageing. Nor that there is nothing to be done. On the contrary, there is much that can be done, both in terms of prevention before the disease develops and during the various stages of the disease process. In parallel, the blood biomarker p-tau217 is now available for diagnostic use, while BioArctic has announced that it expects to launch the anti-cancer drug Lecanemab in the Nordic region in 2026. For the first time, early diagnosis and disease-modifying treatment can meet in clinical practice. This places new demands on healthcare - but also opens up huge opportunities. The question is: are we ready for the future?
